School Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training
\n\nThe PREPaRE curriculum has been developed by the National Association of School Psychologists as part of NASP's long-term leadership in supporting and developing school crisis prevention and response capabilities at the local level.

\n\n\n\n

Schools play a critical role in meeting the needs of students, staff, families and often the local community during times of crisis. They must have crisis plans and trained teams in place to serve this function effectively within the unique context of the school culture. PREPaRE 1 focuses on crisis planning; PREPaRE 2 focuses on crisis intervention and recovery and will be offered in late spring 2014.

\n\n\n\n

PREPaRE is the only comprehensive curriculum developed by school-based professionals with firsthand experience and formal training. The curriculum builds on existing personnel, resources, and programs; provides for sustainability; and can be adapted to individual school needs and size.

Helping Students Through Trauma and Loss
\n\nSpend the day with Julie Petersen learning how to become a "witness” to a child's traumatic experience to best appreciate the intensity of the experience and the needs of the child; to see what he now sees as he looks at himself and the world around him and support him to success in school. Julie will demonstrate how TLC's evidence-based; structured sensory intervention process brings children and adolescents relief from the terror of their traumatic
\n\nexperiences. This structured process is used in schools and agencies across the country and has been proven, via research, to reduce trauma-specific reactions across all three major sub-categories of PTSD, while increasing school performance and decreasing school absences and office discipline referrals.
\n\n
\n\nJulie Petersen is a TLC Certified Trainer, TLC Level 2 Trauma Consultant and a School Counselor at the Chippewa Falls Middle School. She has attended workshops at the TLC Institute for the past four summers and is currently working on her Level 3 Trauma Supervisor, as well as Trauma Assessment Consultant certification. Through the use of Sensory Integrated Techniques for Children and Adolescents, students on her caseload have increased school performance, and decreased PTSD symptoms, school absences and office discipline referrals. Julie will share the concepts behind this technique and interventions that can be used in classrooms, groups and individually with children of trauma. This training will allow participants hands-on experiences to bring back to deal with children of trauma in your school.

\n\n\n\n

Audience: Designed for School Counselors, School Nurses, Principals, Teachers and any other school staff dealing with Children of Trauma.

\n\n Audience:
\n\n Pupil Services staff, Health educators, Administrators, and others concerned about youth suicide
\n\n
\n\n Among Wisconsin youth, suicide is the second leading cause of death and accounts for almost 1 in 5 of all deaths. State law requires school districts to provide specific classroom instruction in youth suicide prevention and to annually notify staff about the Department of Public Instruction’s resources.

\n\n

\n\n The workshop helps participants understand the scope of youth suicide and what schools can do to reduce suicidal acts and thoughts among students. Participants learn about the prevalence of youth suicide, risk and protective factors, comprehensive prevention programs, and crisis intervention.

\n\n

\n\n This workshop is not intended to train all school staff, but prepares teams of pupil services staff, health educators, and administrators to plan, prevent, and intervene at their schools. Action planning is integrated into all phases of the training program. A model workshop for all school staff is provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring their suicide crisis response plans for discussion and revision.

\n\nAbout the Trainer:  Scott Caldwell, MA CSAC
\n\nScott is a licensed substance abuse counselor and prevention specialist with a decade of clinical experience with adolescents. He is a member of the
\n\nMotivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and is the SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral for Treatment) program coordinator at Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

\n\n\n\n

What is SBIRT?
\n\nSBIRT is a comprehensive and evidence-based model for delivery by student
\n\nservices. The service begins with administering a standardized Screening instrument. For students who show moderate or high risk results, a Brief Intervention (BI) is conducted. The BI is delivered with motivational interviewing and is protocol-guided. For those students who show high risk concerns and who do not respond to the BI, a Referral to Treatment may be initiated.

\n\n (Chippewa Falls) 6 & 12 Strategies for Behavior Interventions

\n\n

\n\n DAY ONE - March 19
\n\n 6 Early Stage, Highly Structured, Behavior Interventions

\n\n

\n\n You have classroom expectations and a classroom management system in place. For most students it works well, yet you have a couple of students who are struggling with their behavior. You know a referral is too premature but you want to help these students with their behavior and academics. In this workshop educators will work through 6 behavior interventions that will help reduce the behavior and be able to collect baseline data for future reference.

\n\n

\n\n The 6 interventions are from the book Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students by Randy Sprick, Ph.D., founder of Safe and Civil Schools.

\n\n

\n\n These early interventions:

\n\n\n\n

\n\n * Planned Discussion
\n\n * Academic Assistance
\n\n * Goal Setting
\n\n * Data Collection and Debriefing
\n\n * Increasing Positive Interactions
\n\n * STOIC Analysis and Intervention

\n\n\n\n

\n\n

\n\n

\n\n DAY TWO - April 9
\n\n 12 Highly Structured, Individual Behavior Interventions

\n\n

\n\n In this workshop Tier 2/3 behavior interventionists or members of a school-based team are trained in how to implement 12 behavioral interventions. A classroom teacher would need assistance in implementing one of these interventions. Highly structured interventions need to be a collaborative effort
\n\n between the classroom teacher and the interventionist or team to help the teacher select the most appropriate
\n\n intervention/s to implement.

\n\n

\n\n The 12 interventions are powerful tools that are more time-intensive to plan and more time-consuming to implement. These interventions are from the book by Randy Sprick, Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students, from Safe and Civil Schools.

\n\n

\n\n Unlike early-stage interventions, highly structured interventions are not presented in an order of implementation ease. Instead, each intervention targets a specific factor or skill and can serve as a stand-alone intervention or be included with other interventions in a more comprehensive plan.

\n\n

\n\n Interventions include:

\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n\n Audience (Both Days):
\n\n Any grade level educator dealing with student behavior issues, special education teachers, counselors, psychologist, social workers, and administrators.

\n\n DESCRIPTION:\n\n (Chippewa Falls) 6 & 12 Strategies for Behavior Interventions\n\n\n\n DAY ONE - March 19\n\n 6 Early Stage, Highly Structured, Behavior Interventions\n\n\n\n You have classroom expectations and a classroom management system in place. For most students it works well, yet you have a couple of students who are struggling with their behavior. You know a referral is too premature but you want to help these students with their behavior and academics. In this workshop educators will work through 6 behavior interventions that will help reduce the behavior and be able to collect baseline data for future reference.\n\n\n\n The 6 interventions are from the book Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students by Randy Sprick, Ph.D., founder of Safe and Civil Schools.\n\n\n\n These early interventions:\n\n\n\n \n\n Have been shown to be effective based on multiple studies. They are the easiest interventions to implement.\n\n\n\n\n\n * Planned Discussion\n\n * Academic Assistance\n\n * Goal Setting\n\n * Data Collection and Debriefing\n\n * Increasing Positive Interactions\n\n * STOIC Analysis and Intervention\n\n\n\n \n\n Can be implemented without needing highly specialized training.\n\n \n\n Are implemented prior to seeking help from either a school team or an interventionist unless the student's behavior is so physically dangerous or severely disruptive that seeking special assistance in a Code Red emergency is necessary.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n DAY TWO - April 9\n\n 12 Highly Structured, Individual Behavior Interventions\n\n\n\n In this workshop Tier 2/3 behavior interventionists or members of a school-based team are trained in how to implement 12 behavioral interventions. A classroom teacher would need assistance in implementing one of these interventions. Highly structured interventions need to be a collaborative effort\n\n between the classroom teacher and the interventionist or team to help the teacher select the most appropriate\n\n intervention/s to implement.\n\n\n\n The 12 interventions are powerful tools that are more time-intensive to plan and more time-consuming to implement. These interventions are from the book by Randy Sprick, Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students, from Safe and Civil Schools.\n\n\n\n Unlike early-stage interventions, highly structured interventions are not presented in an order of implementation ease. Instead, each intervention targets a specific factor or skill and can serve as a stand-alone intervention or be included with other interventions in a more comprehensive plan.\n\n\n\n Interventions include:\n\n\n\n \n\n Managing Physically Dangerous Behavior\n\n \n\n Managing Severely Disruptive Behavior\n\n \n\n Managing the Cycle of Emotional Escalation\n\n \n\n Cueing and Precorrecting\n\n \n\n Self-Monitoring and Self-Evaluation\n\n \n\n Positive Self-Talk and Attribution Training\n\n \n\n Teaching Replacement Behaviors\n\n \n\n Functional Communication\n\n \n\n Structured Reinforcement Systems\n\n \n\n Defining Limits and Establishing Consequences\n\n \n\n Relaxation and Stress Management\n\n \n\n Internalizing Problems (Depression and Anxiety) and Mental Health\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Audience (Both Days):\n\n Any grade level educator dealing with student behavior issues, special education teachers, counselors, psychologist, social workers, and administrators.\n\n\n\n March 19 and April 9, 2014\n\n 8:30 am-3:30 pm (Registration 8:00-8:30 am) Both days\n\n \n\n CESA #10, 725 W. In today’s schools, care for the person/s harmed through misbehavior is rarely addressed in intentional ways. Misbehavior is punished leaving the student to feel disconnected from school and at times also feeling like a victim. When misbehavior is not addressed in a restorative manner the focus of academic learning is broke. Working through Restorative Practices, misbehaving students deal with the harm they have caused to individuals and to the school community. An understanding of the harm done and a restoring of safety or relationships starts to happen and the emphasis of learning in a caring environment can resume. The goals of Restorative Practices apply not only to those involved in or affected by misbehavior, but to the larger educational community as well.

\n\n\n\n

Key Goals of Restorative Practice:

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Day 1—Participants will have an understanding of: Restorative Practices-where its roots are from and how it is being used today.-Punishment vs. Restoration - Where are you on the discipline continuum? - The four paned window of conduct - Values and Concepts of a Restorative School Environment - How does your school check out?

\n\n\n\n

Day 2—Participants will have an understanding of the “practices” in Restorative
\n\nPractice and how they fit into a continuum (think triangle in PBIS) - Types of
\n\nRestorative Practice: Reintegration following suspensions, Class meetings, Circles, Conferencing, Truancy mediation, Bullying

\n\n Audience:
\n\n Pupil Services staff, Health educators,Administrators, and others concerned about youth suicide
\n\n
