DPI Updates Spring 2014

1.    The core clusters within Online YRBS system have been updated.  If sites select all clusters, it will now replicate the 2013 Wisconsin YRBS.  2013 statewide YRBS data is available at: http://sspw.dpi.wi.gov/sspw_yrbsindx. 

2.    Wisconsin DPI was awarded the School Age Parent grant through the Office of Adolescent Health.  13 districts and consortia were awarded School Age Parent Grants within Wisconsin. For more information go to: http://sspw.dpi.wi.gov/sspw_schlageparent. 

3.    Wisconsin DPI was awarded the Competitive School-based HIV/STD Prevention and Surveillance grant through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The HIV grant will have statewide activities around policy and curriculum, but will have targeted activities to 15 priority districts in policy, curriculum, referrals for health service and safe school climate.  Site selection has occurred and was based on disparities in data.  More information can be found at: http://sspw.dpi.wi.gov/sspw_aidshiv. 

4.    Wisconsin DHS, in collaboration with DPI, was awarded the enhanced Chronic Disease grant.  Work in 15 priority districts will be occurring in this grant as well.  Site selection has occurred and was based on disparities in data.  

5.    There are ongoing DPI internal workgroup meetings for Academic and Career Plans. In addition, an advisory committee is being formed with stakeholders from many educational, business, community, and governmental areas. Its main charge will be advising DPI on the development of the administrative rule directing academic and career planning services and the professional development necessary to implement ACPs statewide by 2017-2018. The governor’s 2013-2015 biennial budget included $1.1 million for the purchase of career development technology and professional development. DPI will soon have a website, list-serv, and email address dedicated to supporting districts’ implementation of ACPs.

8.    Wisconsin is one of seven states to receive a Safe Schools-Healthy Students grant.  DPI received this federal grant to address school safety in the Beloit, Racine, and Menominee Indian school districts.

10.    “My Feelings Matter!” Poster Contest
Energize your community around children’s mental health- encourage children and youth of all ages to participate in a poster contest!  The following age groups are eligible to participate:
•    Preschoolers
•    K-2nd grade
•    3rd grade-5th grade
•    6th grade-8th grade
•    High school

11.    Gay Straight Alliance for Safe Schools and Diverse and Resilient are pleased to present "Safe Schools, Safe Communities: State Conference on LGBT Youth" on Friday, April 11, 2014 at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  This year's conference is hosted by UW-Parkside's LGBTQ Resource Center.

12.    Building the Heart of Successful Schools Conference will be held on December 11-12th at the Chula Vista in Wisconsin Dells, with a pre-conference on December 10th.  More information to come.

DPI Updates Winter 2014

Fall 2013 DPI Updates

2. Wisconsin DPI was awarded both the Competitive School-based HIV/STD Prevention and Surveillance grant through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the School Age Parent grant through the Office of Adolescent Health.  Both started on August 1st.  A competitive grant application to districts/consortia was just released for the School Age Parent grant and is due November 13th (see separate e-mail and InSPIRE website with info) http://sspw.dpi.wi.gov/sspw_schlageparent_inspire.

4. 5. Eileen Hare Started on Monday, September 30th as the new Health, Physical Education and Coordinated School Health Consultant at DPI.

6. DPI is again making student mini-grants available for the 2013-2014 school year. The amount of these student-driven awards may not exceed $1,000 each. Only one award may be granted to any student group, although districts and/or buildings may submit multiple proposals. The grant applications are due to the DPI, in hard copy, by the end of the day on Friday, October 4th. Applicants will be notified of their status the week of November 25th. 7. Wisconsin School Health Awards ceremony will be held on October 23, 2013 in conjunction with the WHPE (Wisconsin Health and PE) Conference in Waukesha.

The 29th Annual State Superintendent's Conference on Special Education and Pupil Services Leadership Issues will be held November 19-20, 2013, at the Marriott Madison West in Middleton, Wisconsin.
